Scientists at Adelaide's Edinburgh Defence base have developed a new robot that is able to detect radioactive materials.
The so-called robotic watchdog can be operated by remote control
from up to 350 metres away, meaning dangerous substances can be
investigated from a safe distance.
Dr Brian Jarvis from the Defence Science and Technology Organisation
says the six-wheeled robot is compact and can be used in a variety of
situations.
He says it will help protect authorities from the dangers of radiation spills.
"It shows for the first time that we can remotely not only detect
but identify what the nature of the threat or the source is so we know
how to respond most appropriately,'' he said.
