Hishammuddin (fourth from left, back row) together with Education director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom (third from left) and secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Zulkurnain Awang (fifth from left) with the 15 teams representing Malaysia in the World Robot Olympiad in Taiwan after the handover of the Jalur Gemilang.
By KAREN CHAPMAN TWO Malaysian teams brought back gold and silver medals from the World Robot Olympiad held in Taiwan recently. The teams from SM Teknik Sejingkat in Kuching and SK Taman Megah in Petaling Jaya won the gold medal in the upper secondary school section and silver in the primary school section respectively under the open category. SK Taman Megah teacher-in-charge Mohd Zakuan Abdullah said the team, comprising Year Four twins Francis Peter and Thomas Lionel Moissinac and Year Six pupil Nadia Esham, built four robots based on the theme “Security and Safety” in the open category. “Since we participated in the open category, we were free to interpret the theme and we decided to construct four robots in a search-and-rescue effort,” he said when contacted.
He said the SK Taman Megah team also received the Most Popular Team Award where participants themselves voted. The school, he added, had previously represented Malaysia at the Olympiad in 2005. About 2,900 teams, comprising students in both primary and secondary schools, took part in the National Robotics Competition (NRC) 2007 out of which 15 were selected for international competition. The champions of each category in the finals of the NRC were chosen to represent Malaysia at the Olympiad. The teams had competed in 13 zones before qualifying for the finals at the National Science and Technology Carnival in August. Organised by the Education Ministry, the National Science Centre and Sasbadi Sdn Bhd, the objectives of the NRC are to help students build a solid foundation in Mathematics, Science, Technology, Design and ICT, and to train them to work as a team, to enhance creativity and to promote robotics among students. Although the other teams did not win any medals at the Olympiad, they received 10 excellent winners awards. A total of 170 teams from 18 countries took part in the Olympiad. Sasbadi Sdn Bhd managing director K. H. Law said the Olympiad was an international programme open to children aged between nine and 18. “It aims to provide an inspirational learning experience for children by celebrating science and technology and combining educational context with hands-on challenges that empower them to create their own theories and solutions,” he said. Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein had earlier presented a Jalur Gemilang to the teams before they left for the Olympiad. Recommend this article... Last update: 02-12-2007 21:26
